In the early days of The Apple Barn, a Sevierville woman made hand-pressed apple pies from the Kilpatricks' crops. Over time she tired of selling pies from her car, so the family built her a kitchen on site. ![]() He watches apples go from sapling to cider just like his father has for more than 40 years. Kilpatrick serves as vice president of the family business, but you won't usually find him in the office. They never imagined The Apple Barn would blossom into the business it is now.įarmhands tend to more than 5,000 trees that grow dozens of apple varieties. The Kilpatricks planted their first apple tree because of a bad tobacco harvest in 1976 and started selling apples from their carport. The Apple Barn is busiest now until December when apples are ripe for picking and tourists take trips to see the fall colors in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The apple empire employs hundreds of people and sells thousands of different products. Kilpatrick grew up alongside The Apple Barn, which now includes a creamery, hard cider bar, winery, Christmas store, candy shop and two restaurants open year-round. He still remembers dirt floors, grazing cattle and rows of tobacco that grew where apple orchards are now.
